Personalized Artwork Alleviates Storage Space while Creating an Everlasting Keepsake
Louma El-Khoury, founder of Pokidots LLC, is a Seattle-based mother, artist, and entrepreneur who transforms clothing with emotional value into framed keepsakes for display. Spring cleaners inspired by Marie Kondo’s decluttering tips can trade in boxes of dusty storage for gratifying family heirlooms. In a big box store world, Pokidots! offers a unique, sentimental treasure that represents your family’s personal story.
Pokidots! came into fruition by El-Khoury’s own motherhood experience. “I had this idea while going through my little one’s outgrown baby clothes to give away and found some pieces that I did not want to part with,” she explains. She used her fashion design and illustration experience to transform her daughters’ favorite pieces into fashion illustrations of how she pictured her daughters as grown-ups in repurposed outfits. “Now my memories are pieces of art hanging in their bedrooms.”
El-Khoury runs Pokidots! full-time with a growing portfolio of designs to fit a variety of universal decors. Orders are easily customized online and shipped internationally. Upon receiving the working materials from customers, they can enjoy their new art in about one to two weeks within the US, two to three weeks for Canada, and three to four weeks everywhere else.
As business picked up, El-Khoury began realizing benefits she never saw coming. Step one typically provides customers with relief in finding a purpose for those items they weren’t ready to part with anytime soon. Step two subsequently makes it easier to part with other items from that era, allowing customers to donate any additional excess to families in need. A happenstance surfaced after Pokidots! was able to donate keepsakes to parents of angel babies in the hopes of helping their healing process, giving the designer an even deeper purpose.
“What I didn’t expect was the way my clients used the custom keepsakes to tell their beautiful and personal stories,” El-Khoury says. “Each family has a unique story, and it’s rewarding to see how my keepsakes help them capture it forever, let go of clutter and, in some cases, even help them heal.”
